Students’ Diversified Learning ExperiencesExchange Programme at the Georgia State University, USA 1. Summer Exchange Programme at Simon Fraser University (Canada) Deng Yuli Mathematics (Year 4 in 2019/20) “Spending my whole year at Simon Fraser University not solely enhanced my academic knowledge and skills, more fantastically, it enriched my original step-by-step, uneventful life! I sincerely appreciate every single person who helped me throughout the year, and genuinely appreciate each unexpected beautiful chapter we built together! Thanks all of you from the bottom of my heart!” 2. Start-up Semester at University of California, Berkeley (USA) Wang Xuemeng Mathematics (Year 4 in 2019/20) “Throughout my journey in Berkeley, I learned a lot, travelled a lot, and experienced what I would never imagine to experience. I gained knowledge relating to entrepreneurship and business throughout this semester, and understood the framework and process better. By taking this precious chance, I improved my overall ability a lot and gained a lot of great experiences. With the passion of knowing, discussing and exploring, I am full of determination to be a better student, innovator and entrepreneur.” 3. Student Exchange Programme at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands) Liu Jiadong Mathematics (Year 3 in 2019/20) “Last semester, the University of Amsterdam offered me various kinds of experience in Europe and left me with very fond memories. During my days there, I got the opportunities to explore the rich culture of Amsterdam and feel the high academic standard of this university. Although there were not many Asian students, the students and professors paid special attention to the new international students, creating a caring community.” 4. Student Internship Programme at the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) & Institute of Bioresource and Agriculture (IBA) Chan Cheuk Wing Biology (Year 2 in 2019/20) “Being a participant in this summer internship was a rewarding and unforgettable experience, as I learnt more than I had ever expected. I was able to learn different farming skills and sustainable agriculture in Hong Kong. Before the internship, I had known nothing about farming and never cultivated my own vegetables. But after I experienced this internship, I gained a sense of satisfaction when I was able to collect and eat the vegetables that I cultivated, and I raised my awareness towards the situation of farming in Hong Kong.” Poon Yan To Biology (Year 3 in 2019/20) “Thanks to the agricultural experts in AFCD, now I am equipped with some basic farming techniques such as grafting and pest control. Noticing local farmers’ devotion to farming in the face of difficulties like exhaustion, troubles from pests and huge expenditure on land rent and organic pesticides, I think they deserve more recognition and support from us. I am surprised to see Hong Kong has undergone agriculture modernisation, for instance, hydroponics and the latest agricultural machinery were introduced. With the help of modern technology, I believe more made-in-Hong-Kong crops will be sold in the market.” Wong Ching Laam Carina Biology (Year 3 in 2019/20) “I learnt organic farming knowledge in Tai Lung Experimental Station, which is a precious experience in my life. We have the opportunities to experience farmers’ work, for example catching pests, making disease control devices and site visits. The most impressive experience is catching worms inside corn which are good at hiding. This is a great chance for us to experience a hard daily life of a farmer and understand the difficulty of growing crops and the importance to appreciate food.” 5. Summer Internship Programme at Wellab Limited Yau Ting Ting Biology (Year 2 in 2019/20) “I learnt a lot in Microbiology/Biology and Inorganic Sections of the lab. I helped in sample preparation, media preparation and the organisation of data records. I also performed test runs of microbiological tests. The experience in Inorganic Sections was totally new to me and I learnt a lot that were outside of my field of study. For example, I helped in testing the nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in water samples. Apart from that, I also had a taste in the planting work of mangroves which was an experience that I would not be able to experience in school. All in all, this internship was a rewarding experience and I enjoyed it a lot.” 6. Student Internship Programme at World Health Organisation (WHO) (Switzerland) Coco Ho Biology (Year 2 in 2018/19, MSc in Environmental and Public Health Management) “Internship at World Trade Organization (WTO) is one of the most unforgettable experiences in my life. It was exciting to witness World Health Assembly (WHA), WTO International Forum on Food Safety and Trade and many other events. I am grateful to have an opportunity to contribute to this international organisation as a consultant despite working remotely owing to the pandemic. It was challenging to adapt to a new working mode at first, but I started getting used to it and feel it is convenient to work remotely now.” 7. Student Exchange Programme at Eckerd College (USA) Ting Jiat Yin Biology (Year 3 in 2018/19) “The summer spent at Eckerd College was a memorable and amazing experience to me. As a biology student, having the opportunity to work with marine animals inspired me to see how humanity can save the world one small step at a time. I’ve learned a lot and met many amazing mentors and friends at Eckerd College. This summer was a very fruitful summer and I am grateful for this chance to participate in the internship.” Wong Lok To, Thomas Biology (Year 2 in 2018/19) “The experience at Eckerd College was marvelous. You’ve got sunshine 24/7, natural beaches along the coastline in spite of occasionally unpredictable weather. It was a delightful experience to spark your curiosity through new knowledge and culture, as well as exploring the other side of Mother Earth.” 8. Student Exchange Programme at McGill University (Canada) Li Ronghao Computer Science (Year 4 in 2019/20) “I’ve been always looking forward to studying abroad, and finally my dream came true when the Department offered me the exchange opportunity to study at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. I spent five pleasant and meaningful months there. Montreal, as once the centre of Canada, has left many historical buildings and stories in the city, which is the same for McGill University where knowledge and ideals are passed on.” |
