HKBU Science Start-ups Partner with Business and Industry to Leverage Research Excellence for Great Social Impact

HKBU Science spares no effort in transferring knowledge and technology to the community and ensuring that the world-changing ideas and innovations bear fruit. The Faculty is proud that a number of research projects have been successfully transferred into commercial products through start-ups for the benefit of society.

Our Recent Start-ups

Crimson Vision Technology Limited

Research team of the Crimson Vision Technology Limited

The development of technologies in the environment sector has sparked increasing interest due to a series of environmental challenges that we are currently facing (for example, ocean pollution, soil quality deterioration, fog and haze etc.). As a result, technologies related to environmental pollution detection, health and security monitoring have garnered increasing attention, together with rapid technological advancement in these areas.

To prevent further harm to the environment, as well as to people, normative rules and systematic monitoring techniques should be established. The emerging organic semiconductor materials offer additional advantages and process flexibility for applications in environment, health and safety monitoring.

The newly established Crimson Vision Technology Limited received funding support from HKBU Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities (TSSSU) provided by the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) in April 2019. It develops near-infrared (NIR) visualising technologies using organic electronic devices. The emerging organic electronics offer additional advantages such as large area, flexibility and solution-based fabrication process at low cost.

The Company aims to foster innovative, economically viable and environmentally friendly applications through the related patents and core NIR visualizing technologies. A series of technologies have already been developed in the healthcare sector, leveraging NIR visualizing technologies for use in detecting NIR absorbing materials, e.g., microplastics in marine life, and wellness monitoring.

New Life Medicine Technology Company Limited

The Company was established by Professor Gary Wong, Head of the Department of Chemistry under the 3-year funding support of up to HK$2.95 million from HKBU Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities (TSSSU) provided by the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) in 2017.

Professor Wong and his team have developed smart nanoparticles to detect prostate cancer (PCa). The innovative test, which can detect the biomarker affected by cancer cells with an accuracy of up to 90%, can be easily used at home by simply mixing a urine sample with the chemical agent. Within a short period of time, users will know if they are likely to have prostate cancer and whether further screening and tests are required.

The novel method is fast, non-invasive and can help address the limited sensitivity and specificity problems associated with traditional blood tests which only have an accuracy of around 40% and can solely be conducted in a professional laboratory setting. The invention has been filed with patent applications in the United States, Europe, mainland China, Taiwan and the PCT Procedure. This prostate cancer detection kit technology has also been licensed to Jacobson Pharma Corporation Limited for commercialisation.

The prostate cancer project won the Gold Medal with the Congratulations of Jury and the Thailand Award for the Best International Invention at the 47th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva held in Switzerland from 10 to 14 April 2019
