Artificial Intelligence and Digital Media Joining Hands in the Age of Big Data

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising our whole way of life.  It casts prominent effects on the landscape of the digital media industry.  AI technologies are appearing in computational journalism, computer-assisted editorial judgement, multimedia processing, machine learning, recommender systems, search engines, immersive media, social media bots, robot reporters, and automated content-generation and promotion systems.

The interplay between human and machine is shaping both sets of actors simultaneously.  Critical reflection on the legal, moral and ethical issues of these developments has also come to the fore, with growing concerns about fake news and misinformation, algorithm-driven audience polarisation, privacy protection, the surveillance society, news professionalism and the ever-enlarging knowledge gap and digital divide.

The new MSc in AI and Digital Media is the first of its kind in Hong Kong (AI + digital media) as a full-fledged interdisciplinary taught postgraduate programme focusing on the application of big data analytics and AI for media communication.  The Programme aims to equip students with cutting-edge interdisciplinary knowledge and skills in AI and media communication needed for the computational and digital age, thus to increase their competitiveness in digital media industry.

Grounded in an academic core of several theoretical and methodological courses, the Programme offers a wide range of elective courses focusing on knowledge and practice in media institutions and operations in the context of the digital transition.  These combinations of courses have been chosen with the specific goal of nurturing high-quality, ethical professionals and managerial personnel in the media and communication industry.

This unique new programme is jointly offered by the Department of Journalism under School of Communication and the Department of Computer Science under Faculty of Science.  The School of Communication was established in September 1991 from the former Department of Communication founded in 1968. The communication and media subjects ranked top 100 in the world in the 2018 QS ranking.  The Department of Computer Science has been around for almost three decades and is particularly strong in the areas of Databases, Computational Intelligence, Pattern Recognition, Machine Learning, and Networking. The Artificial Intelligence area is ranked 42nd in the world in the 2018 CS ranking
