HKBU Partnered with Simon Fraser University to Launch Double-degree Programme in Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science

The fields of mathematics, statistics and actuarial science have evolved dramatically over the past 10 years and are still changing today, as seen by the financial crisis in 2008. Today’s market environment is characterised by increased volatility, with many corporations now recognising the need for advanced risk management practices. In Asia, experienced actuary scientists are highly desirable. When salary, work environment, stress, career outlook, security, and physical demands are jointly taken into consideration, mathematician, statistician, and actuary are consistently rated among the top of the best careers.

To leverage the quantitative and market skills of mathematics, statistics and actuarial science with corporate financial management practices, we proudly offer a new double degree (DD) programme between HKBU and Simon Fraser University (SFU) of Canada launched starting from the academic year 2019-20. The DD programme is a full-time 4-year programme which makes use of the shared major courses in both degrees and is achievable due to the available units of free electives. Students enrolled in this programme will study for a total of 4 years: the first 2 years at HKBU, and the following 2 years at SFU. Graduating students will be awarded two degrees: BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and Statistics and BSc in Actuarial Science by HKBU and SFU respectively. It is expected that graduates from the DD programme will obtain positions globally, including the Asia Pacific region. After completion, students can accumulate some years of commercial experience and obtain professional certifications, and thus become more competitive in the financial market.

What makes this DD programme distinctive is the tuition fee arrangement. Local students are only required to pay the tuition fees for the HKBU programme (i.e., HK$42,100 per academic year as of today); they need not worry about the tuition fees at SFU.  We have also established a $220,200 “HKBU Science Double Degree Entrance Scholarship for Local Students” to subsidise tuition fees and the overseas expenses at SFU.
